Navigating a divorce often makes you feel torn between reclaiming your independent identity and preserving your children’s stability. The sudden collapse of the life you planned forces you to balance your own grief and reinvention with the immediate, fragile needs of your family. Yet, discovering personal independence and remaining a rock-solid parent are not mutually exclusive goals.
This major transition is your ultimate opportunity to rebuild your life on your own terms while fiercely honoring your deepest family commitments. By intentionally blending radical self-care with consistent, loving parenting, you show your kids exactly what resilience looks like in real-time. True freedom does not mean escaping your responsibilities; it means stepping into your new life with a clear vision, a grounded heart, and a stronger foundation for both you and your children.

Independence Day is often associated with fireworks, barbecues, and celebrating our nation’s freedom. But when you’re navigating a divorce, custody matter, or significant family transition, the word freedom can take on a much different meaning.
Perhaps you’re experiencing freedom from constant conflict, walking on eggshells, or living in survival mode. Or maybe this season doesn’t feel like freedom at all. It feels uncertain, overwhelming, and unfamiliar. Both experiences can be true. Freedom isn’t always something we feel immediately—it often grows slowly as we begin letting go of what no longer serves us and start creating a life that feels more peaceful and authentic.
One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself during this process is the freedom to stop carrying everything at once. The freedom to acknowledge your emotions without letting them define you. The freedom to choose peace over proving a point, healing over holding onto resentment, and intention over reaction. These small choices, made consistently, begin creating the life you’re working toward.
A Few Things to Remember:
- Freedom often begins internally before it shows up externally
- You cannot control someone else’s choices, but you can choose how you respond
- Peace is built one intentional decision at a time
- Every healthy boundary you set is a step toward greater freedom
- The life you’re building deserves as much attention as the life you’re leaving behind
“Sometimes the greatest freedom isn’t changing your circumstances—it’s no longer allowing them to define you.”– Hazel

Showing up as a parent during any crisis, including divorce, is complicated. Emotions are often running high Uncertainty is too. One question looms large, “How can I still show up as a healthy parent? (Even though sometimes I don’t feel like I am?)”
The #1 way you can do this is to own your own humanity through increased communication, being age-appropriately honest with children, speaking respectfully about their other parent and modeling healthy ways for processing emotions. This will, over time, increase their trust in you, even when you make mistakes. . You will be Signaling Safety.
A Few Things to Remember:
- Repair is Essential: Showing children you are the parent and are taking responsibility for your emotions and actions will unburden them from “feeling” responsibility for your wellbeing. This is NOT their job. But they do still have one – like cleaning their room. Hold them accountable in age-appropriate ways.
- Make a Plan: When your entire family is going through vast changes that are confusing for everyone, making a plan for how you will practice working through is pivotal.
- Keep Conversations age appropriate
- Acknowledge big emotions with understanding and compassion
- Practice healthy sharing of concerns when things are CALM.
- Consciously create habits to ensure healthy family patterns
- Do Your Own Healing Work: Getting the support you need is imperative. I call it gathering your team. Informed coaches help you create space for calm thinking and the ability to respond with love to those most precious to you. EVEN PERHAPS TO YOURSELF.
All of the above brings alignment to what is, and this brings FREEDOM. Freedom of expression, honesty, forgiveness and trying again and again. Afterall, we are being offered the opportunity to grow through our difficulties, not just endure them. This, my friends, is where true freedom lies. And..where you get to become the hero of your own story. One new pattern at a time. One honest conversation at a time. One next right step at a time.
Happy Independence Day. – Love, Today Coach Kimra
